Russia: Equestrian

This medal by Roman Kvita is made of rusty metal. The silhouette of a horse symbolizes the elegance of equestrian sport as well as its darker side, where graceful strength becomes a tool for suppressing freedom.

Egypt: Shooting

The piece of wall on Tomáš Roubal's medal resembles an execution site. Egyptian law allows the death penalty for more than 100 offenses. Human rights observers warn of political trials resulting in death sentences, often for crimes linked to the vaguely defined charge of “terrorism.”

Belarus: Wrestling

For this medal, Jakub Berdych Karpelis took inspiration from a mirror, symbolizing the necessity of facing the truth. At the same time, it reflects the sense of powerlessness that prevails not only in local prisons, but also in the country as a whole. A subtle detail further alludes to Belarus’s fragile status, suggesting that without its 'big brother,' it might not exist at all.

Vietnam: Decathlon

The medal, made from strips of the Vietnamese criminal code, highlights ten quotations that reveal the vague legal provisions often used to silence human rights and environmental defenders.

Cuba: Sailing

Viktorie Beldová's medal, composed of fragments of rubber dinghies, tells the stories of refugees who risk everything to escape the brutal Cuban regime. Its design captures both the fragility of hope and the tragedy of perilous journeys at sea.

Nicaragua: Sprint

Jonathan Jussey designed this medal to reflect the horror endured by those forced to flee for their lives in Nicaragua, simply for daring to seek freedom. It symbolizes the finish line of a race with no winners, a race that leaves behind only scars and trauma for the unfortunate souls who survive its ordeal.
